Melon Seeds for Planting: Cantaloupe, Honeydew, Canary, and Heirloom Varieties

Few garden rewards beat slicing into a melon you grew yourself, still warm from the sun. Our collection of melon seeds spans netted cantaloupes and muskmelons, smooth honeydews, golden canary types, fragrant French and Spanish heirlooms, and a few fun curiosities. Nearly all are open-pollinated and non-GMO, and most do well in heat, which makes them a natural fit for the sunniest, warmest corner of your garden.

Melon Seed Varieties: From Rocky Ford to Piel de Sapo

For classic cantaloupe flavor, Hale's Best Jumbo, Delicious 51, Rocky Ford (also sold as Eden Gem), Edisto 47, Kansas, and Planters Jumbo are tried-and-true muskmelons, and True Love F1 is a hybrid option. Charentais is the small, fragrant French melon with creamy orange flesh, while Minnesota Midget is a compact variety bred for smaller spaces. If you prefer something smoother, Orange Flesh Honeydew and Ice Cream (Green Machine) bring juicy, sweet flesh, and Piel de Sapo, Tendral Verde Tardif, and Crenshaw offer Spanish and American green-skinned types for late-season eating. Canary Yellow, Banana, Ha'Ogen, and Kazakh add golden rinds and mild, honeyed flavor, and Noir des Carmes and Prescott Fond Blanc are French heirlooms. Kiwano and Futo Spindle Bitter Melon are specialty picks for adventurous growers, and not sweet like the rest.

Growing Melons from Seed: Plant Late, Plant Warm

Melons are heat lovers, and the single most important thing you can do is wait for warm soil. Direct sow after your last frost, once the soil has reached at least 70°F, or start seeds indoors about three to four weeks before transplanting in biodegradable pots, since melon roots resent being disturbed. Seeds sprout in about a week to ten days in warm soil. Listings in this collection show 61 to 120 days to maturity, so choose a variety that fits your season, and give each plant plenty of room to sprawl or train vines up a sturdy trellis. Counting backward from fall is easier with the Seedtime garden planning software, which builds a planting calendar around your frost dates, and the layout planner helps you give those sprawling vines the space they need.

Buy Melon Seeds with One Shipping Charge

Whether you're browsing melon seeds for sale for a single hill or melon seeds for planting across several types, it all ships together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when a melon is ripe?

+

It depends on the type. Cantaloupes and muskmelons "slip," meaning the fruit separates from the vine with a gentle twist once it's ready, and they develop a sweet, musky aroma at the stem end. Honeydews and other non-slipping melons don't release, so look for a change in rind color, a softening at the blossom end, and a deeper fragrance, then cut the stem. Melons won't get sweeter after picking, so wait for those signs.

Why is my melon plant flowering but not setting fruit?

+

Early flowers are usually male, and they appear several weeks before the female flowers, which have a tiny melon at the base. Fruit only sets once bees carry pollen to the female flowers, so give plants time and encourage pollinators by planting flowers nearby. Cold nights, extreme heat, and a lack of pollinators can all slow fruit set.

Do melons need a trellis, and how much room do they take?

+

Most varieties want 18 to 36 inches between plants and plenty of space to sprawl, so a sunny spot with room is ideal. Small-fruited types can be trained up a strong trellis or fence to save space, with larger fruits supported in slings made from netting or old tights. Compact varieties like Minnesota Midget are the better pick for smaller gardens.
