Zucchini Seeds for Planting: Classic, Striped, Golden, and Round Varieties

Zucchini is the crop that rewards even a beginner generously, and growing from seed lets you choose far more interesting varieties than a nursery shelf offers. Our collection of zucchini seeds includes classic dark green Black Beauty types, Italian striped and ribbed heirlooms, pale and speckled varieties, golden yellow fruit, and round globes made for stuffing. Most are open-pollinated and non-GMO, and most mature in 46 to 60 days, so planting in late spring puts zucchini on the table by midsummer.

Zucchini Squash Seeds: Black Beauty, Costata Romanesca, Cocozelle, and More

Black Beauty and Dark Green Zucchini are the traditional picks, with dark, glossy fruit and a long track record in home gardens, while Dark Star and Stardust offer other dependable green and speckled options. For flavor, Costata Romanesca is the ribbed Italian heirloom that cooks up firm and nutty, and Cocozelle and Italian Striped bring long, lightly striped fruit with a rich taste. Bianco di Trieste and Grey Zucchini are pale, tender types prized for their delicate texture, and Golden Zucchini adds a bright yellow color to a platter of grilled summer vegetables. Round Zucchini is the one to grow if you want to stuff your squash. Only a couple of these varieties are listed as container-friendly, so plan on a sunny bed with room to spread.

Growing Zucchini from Seed: Warm Soil and Room to Spread

Zucchini is a warm-season crop that hates cold soil, so the most important step is patience. Growing zucchini from seed works best by direct sowing once the last frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 65 to 70°F, planting seeds about an inch deep and giving each plant around three feet of space. Expect sprouts in about a week, and expect plants to grow quickly once the weather settles. In short-season climates, you can start seeds indoors about three weeks before transplanting, in pots that go straight into the ground. The Seedtime garden planning software builds a planting calendar around your frost dates, and the layout planner makes it easy to give each plant the space it needs without wasting a square foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my baby zucchini turning yellow and dropping off?

+

That's almost always a pollination problem. Zucchini plants make male flowers first, then female flowers with a tiny fruit at the base, and bees have to carry pollen from one to the other. If the female flower isn't pollinated, the little fruit yellows, shrivels, and drops. Plant flowers nearby to attract bees, or hand-pollinate by brushing a male flower's pollen into the center of a female flower in the morning.

Why did my healthy zucchini plant suddenly wilt?

+

Squash vine borers are the usual culprit. The larvae tunnel into the base of the stem, and a plant that looked fine one day can collapse the next, often with a sawdust-like frass at the base. Planting a second round in early summer helps you avoid the worst of the moth season, and covering the lower stem with soil or foil can limit egg-laying. Watch for plants that wilt in the heat of the day and don't recover by evening.

How big should I let zucchini get, and can I eat the blossoms?

+

Pick zucchini when they're six to eight inches long, when the skin is glossy and the seeds are still small. Fruit can double in size in just a few days in warm weather, so check plants daily. Leaving oversized fruit on the plant tells it to slow down. The blossoms are edible too, and picking the male flowers won't hurt your harvest. Try them stuffed or fried.
