Sunflower Seeds for Every Kind of Garden

Few flowers make a statement quite like a sunflower, and this collection gives you plenty of directions to take it. Towering giants, deep burgundy blooms, dwarf varieties for pots, and everything in between, our sunflower seeds come from High Mowing, Peaceful Valley, and Southern Exposure, with budget-friendly options from MIgardener, most of them organic sunflower seeds and open-pollinated for anyone who wants to save seed from year to year.

Finding Your Sunflower

If height is the goal, Mammoth Sunflower and Russian Mammoth Sunflower are bred to climb well past head height, with Mammoth in particular known for producing towering plants that dwarf the people standing next to them. For a break from the expected yellow, Velvet Queen Sunflower and Chocolate Cherry Sunflower bring deep burgundy tones, while Hopi Black Dye Sunflower has a history of use as a natural dye plant alongside its dark, striking bloom. Autumn Beauty Sunflower and Evening Colors Sunflower lean into warm, multicolor petals that read more like a sunset than a single-color bloom, and Lemon Queen Sunflower offers a softer, pale yellow alternative to the classic gold. Anyone short on space should look to Sunspot Dwarf Sunflower or Short Stuff Dwarf Sunflower, both compact enough for containers or small beds without giving up a full, cheerful bloom.

Planning a Season of Blooms

Sunflowers grow fast, most varieties mature in 60 to 90 days, which makes them one of the more forgiving flowers to work into a planting schedule. Succession sowing every couple of weeks through the season keeps fresh blooms coming rather than one single flush that fades all at once. The Seedtime garden planning software can map out staggered plantings for you based on your location, and you can add any variety here straight to your calendar to see it laid out. It's free to start, or compare paid plans for unlimited calendars and layout tools across your whole garden. Members get 20% off every order too, so building out a full range of sunflower seeds for planting costs less as your collection grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do giant sunflower varieties need different care than smaller ones?

+

Giant varieties like Mammoth need deep, loose soil and consistent watering to support their rapid growth and heavy flower heads, and tall stalks often benefit from staking, especially in windy spots. Dwarf varieties are far more forgiving and rarely need staking at all, making them a lower-maintenance choice if you want blooms without the extra care that giants require.

Will these sunflowers come back on their own next year?

+

Most sunflowers are annuals, meaning they complete their life cycle in one season and won't return on their own. That said, many varieties self-seed readily if you leave a few spent flower heads in place over winter, which can produce volunteer plants the following spring, though they won't always grow true to the parent variety if it was a hybrid.

Can I grow sunflowers in containers, or do they need to go in the ground?

+

Dwarf varieties like Sunspot and Short Stuff are well suited to large containers and stay compact enough not to tip over in wind. Taller varieties can technically be grown in containers too, but they need a deep, heavy pot to support the root system and prevent the plant from toppling once it reaches full height, so ground planting is usually the more practical choice for anything beyond a dwarf type.
