Growing tips

🌱Start indoors 10–12 weeks before transplanting. Leeks need a long season — for a fall/winter harvest, start seeds in late winter or early spring indoors and transplant out in late spring once seedlings are pencil-thick.

🪴Transplant into deep trenches or dibble holes 6" deep — drop seedlings in and water in without filling the hole. As plants grow, gradually hill soil around the shafts to blanch them white and extend the tender white portion.

💧Water consistently and feed with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer monthly. Leeks are heavy feeders — consistent nutrition produces the thick, uniform shafts Tadorna is known for. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

❄️Tadorna holds well in the field through fall and into winter — harvest as needed rather than all at once. In mild climates, leave in the ground and harvest through winter. Braise whole, slice into soups, or caramelize slowly for a deeply savory side dish.
