A purslane relative, this native of parts of the South and the Caribbean produces elegant panicles of 3/8-inch pink flowers alongside mild, succulent, light green leaves that are great in salads, on sandwiches, and as a spinach substitute. The seedstalks are attractive in dried arrangements, drying through shades of orange, red, brown, gold, and grey, and the plants are tolerant of poor soil and part shade, with a perennial habit in zones 8 and up.
