Tracing its roots to the West Indies before 1700, the Green Striped Cushaw (Cucurbita argyrosperma) is one of the most storied squashes you can grow — a bulb-shaped beauty averaging 10–12 pounds with handsome whitish-green skin mottled in dark stripes. Vigorous vines show strong resistance to squash vine borer and Downy Mildew, and the thick, mildly sweet flesh shines in pies and baking, making it a Southern garden standby for good reason.
