Cucuzzi (Zuchetta, Guinea Bean) Gourd
This Italian heirloom, grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, produces pale green fruits up to 36 inches long, though they are best harvested at 6–12 inches for optimal tenderness. The fruits are milder than luffa, the bug-resistant plants make a great substitute for zucchini, and the large, sprawling vines can grow up to 20 feet long — at Monticello, they were trained up a sturdy 10-foot wooden arbor.
