Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a mint-family herb useful for teas — and for entertaining cats, though only about two out of three cats carry the dominant gene for that famous response. Medicinally, it is traditionally used for colds and flu as a diaphoretic for feverish conditions, and its primary essential oil compound, nepetalactone, is chemically similar to the sedative component of Valerian.
