Growing tips

🌱Direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 60°F, or start indoors 3 to 4 weeks early. Plant in hills of 2 to 3 seeds, thinning to the strongest plant.

🐛Plant a few Blue Hubbard seeds at the garden perimeter as a trap crop — cucumber beetles are irresistibly drawn to them, protecting your cucumbers and melons naturally.

💧Water deeply at the base and avoid wetting leaves to prevent powdery mildew. Once fruits set, reduce watering slightly to concentrate sugars in the flesh.

🍽️Cure at room temperature for 2 weeks after harvest to harden the skin for long storage. Roast halved with butter and maple syrup, or scoop and mash for soups and pies.
