Cucumber Seeds for Planting: Slicing, Pickling, and Specialty Varieties

Few garden crops are as productive as cucumbers, and starting from seed gives you access to types you'll never find at a garden center. Our collection of cucumber seeds covers crisp slicers for salads, pickling cucumbers for the canning pot, and specialty types from Japan, the Middle East, and beyond. Both organic and conventional options are available, and each listing notes which is which, so you can filter by organic status, heirloom type, and container-friendliness.

Cucumber Seed Varieties for Salads, Pickles, and Snacking

For classic slicing, Marketmore 76, Poinsett 76, Straight Eight, Ashley, Sumter, and Marketer are reliable garden staples with crisp, straight fruit. If you like thin-skinned, burpless cucumbers, try Suyo Long, Shintokiwa, Beit Alpha, Muncher, Green Finger, or Silver Slicer, and for something distinctive, Lemon Cucumber, White Wonder, and Sweet Green Armenian bring color and mild flavor. Pickle makers can choose from National Pickling, Homemade Pickles, Double Yield, Boston Pickling, Wisconsin SMR, Rhinish Pickle, Arkansas Little Leaf, and Edmonson, which are bred for blocky shape and firm flesh. Short on space? Spacemaster is a compact plant suited to smaller beds and containers. And for a conversation-starter, Mexican Sour Gherkin (a small, grape-sized cousin) and Little Potato are fun additions to a snacking bed.

Growing Cucumber from Seed: Wait for Warm Soil

Cucumbers are tender and frost-sensitive, so patience pays off. Planting seed after the danger of frost has passed and soil has reached 70°F is a must - seeds won't germinate below 50°F. Once conditions are right, growth is fast: most listings in this collection show 46 to 60 days to maturity, which makes cucumbers ideal for a second sowing a few weeks later. The Seedtime garden planning software builds a planting calendar around your frost dates so you can sow at the right moment, and the layout planner helps you map out hills, rows, or trellises so vines have room to run.

Buy Cucumber Seeds with One Shipping Charge

When you buy cucumber seeds here, you can add seeds from multiple suppliers to the same order and pay one flat shipping charge, or qualify for free standard shipping on Seedtime-fulfilled orders of $49 or more to the lower 48 states. Paid Seedtime members get 20% off seed packets marked "Fulfilled by Seedtime" and 5% off everything else in the store. You can start planning for free, and if you want unlimited calendars and layouts along with those store discounts, compare Seedtime's plans to find the right fit. Whether you want a single packet of cucumber seeds for sale or a slicer, a pickler, and a specialty type together, it all ships together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my cucumber plant flowering but not making fruit?

+

It's usually a matter of timing and pollination. The first 10 to 20 flowers on a plant are male and won't produce fruit, and that most varieties need pollinating insects to carry pollen to the female flowers. If you see plenty of blooms but no cucumbers, give the plant a few more weeks, plant flowers nearby to attract bees, and avoid spraying while it's blooming.

How big should I let cucumbers get before picking?

+

Pick smaller than you think. Harvest pickling types at 2 to 6 inches long and slicing or burpless types at 6 to 10 inches, cut the stem with a sharp knife or pruners instead of pulling. Check plants every day or two in peak season, since cucumbers left too long turn seedy and tough, and leaving oversized fruit on the vine slows further production.

Do cucumbers need a trellis?

+

Most vining varieties do better with one. Growing vertically saves space, keeps fruit off the soil where it can rot or pick up pests, and improves airflow, which helps prevent disease. Compact bush types like Spacemaster can sprawl in a container or small bed without support, so pick based on the room you have and how much building you want to do.
