Purple Top White Turnip has been a garden staple since 1880 — and it’s still one of the most widely planted turnip varieties today. Smooth white globes with a striking magenta crown, mild fine-grained white flesh, and excellent flavor at any size from 3" baby turnips up to large storage roots. Fast-maturing at just 55 days, it’s one of the most reliable cool-season crops you can grow for fall and winter eating.

Growing tips

🌱Direct sow in early spring or late summer for a fall crop. Turnips are fast and cold-hardy — sow 6–8 weeks before first frost for a fall harvest that sweetens with every frost.

🪴Sow thinly and thin to 4–6" apart once seedlings emerge. Crowded turnips stay small and misshapen — thinnings are edible and make a great addition to salads and stir-fries.

💧Water consistently for smooth, crack-free roots. Uneven moisture causes woody texture and splitting. Mulch lightly to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool.

🍲Harvest at 3–4" for peak tenderness, or leave to grow larger for storage. Roast with olive oil and herbs, mash as a potato alternative, or add to soups and stews. The greens are also edible — sauté like collards for a bonus harvest.
