Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my cucumber plant flowering but not making fruit?
It's usually a matter of timing and pollination. The first 10 to 20 flowers on a plant are male and won't produce fruit, and that most varieties need pollinating insects to carry pollen to the female flowers. If you see plenty of blooms but no cucumbers, give the plant a few more weeks, plant flowers nearby to attract bees, and avoid spraying while it's blooming.
How big should I let cucumbers get before picking?
Pick smaller than you think. Harvest pickling types at 2 to 6 inches long and slicing or burpless types at 6 to 10 inches, cut the stem with a sharp knife or pruners instead of pulling. Check plants every day or two in peak season, since cucumbers left too long turn seedy and tough, and leaving oversized fruit on the vine slows further production.
Do cucumbers need a trellis?
Most vining varieties do better with one. Growing vertically saves space, keeps fruit off the soil where it can rot or pick up pests, and improves airflow, which helps prevent disease. Compact bush types like Spacemaster can sprawl in a container or small bed without support, so pick based on the room you have and how much building you want to do.
