Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my broccoli make a tiny head or flower early?
That's usually buttoning or bolting, and stress is the cause. Heat spells, cold snaps, seedlings left too long in small pots, and crowded plants can all trigger a plant to make a small premature head before it has grown enough leaves to support a full one. Transplant sturdy, not rootbound, seedlings at the right time, keep the soil evenly moist, and mulch to keep roots cool.
When do I cut the head, and will the plant keep producing?
Cut the main head while the buds are still tight and dark green, before any yellow flowers open, since flavor drops off quickly once they do. Leave the plant in the ground after cutting, and it will send up smaller side shoots for several more weeks. Harvest those the same way, when the florets are plump but before the stems stretch.
What is eating my broccoli leaves?
Most often it's cabbage worms, the small green caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly, or aphids clustered on tender shoots. Lightweight row cover keeps the butterflies off from the start, caterpillars can be picked by hand, and a strong spray of water knocks aphids off. Check the undersides of leaves regularly, since damage is easiest to stop early.
