Belle Isle Upland Cress (Barbarea verna) is a traditional winter green across the Mountain South, with dark green leaves high in vitamin C, best sown in late summer for winter harvest. Its yellow blossoms help nourish ladybugs, syrphids, and other beneficial insects, and 17th-century Portuguese sailors shipwrecked on Canada's Belle Isle reportedly survived the winter thanks to these nutritious greens.
